TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (8-16, 3-11 MVC) ended its six-game losing streak with an 80-70 win over Indiana State on Saturday.
Laniah Randle posted a career-high 36 points in the win, one game after dropping 32 points at Evansville. Randle shot 12-of-22 from the field and 12-of-15 at the free throw line, and had 11 rebounds.
It was the battle of the defenses in the first quarter, with SIU out-scoring Indiana State, 15-12. Randle had 10 points in the opening 10 minutes for an SIU team that held the Sycamores to 5-of-15 shooting in the first.
The Sycamores had their best quarter of the game in the second, scoring 21 points with a field-goal percentage of 61.5%, while Southern scored 15. At the halftime break, the Salukis trailed, 33-30.
Into the second half, the Saluki offense got going, scoring 24 points and went 2-of-3 from the three-point line. Randle had a team-high nine points in the quarter on 4-of-8 shooting.
With consistent free throw shooting down the stretch, the Salukis held on to win by a final score of 80-70. SIU shot 79% at the free throw line (27-of-34) in the win.
Randle's 36 points are the most she has had in her Saluki career, and marks the third time this season the junior has scored over 30 points.
SIU, now 8-16 overall and 3-11 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will travel to Northern Iowa on Thursday at 6 p.m. in its next game.
