CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (8-17, 3-12 MVC) took the loss on Thursday at Northern Iowa, losing by a final score of 74-51.
The hosts controlled the game defensively early and often on Thursday, starting the night off by holding SIU to 10 points in the first quarter while UNI scored 16. As a team, the Salukis shot 28.6% from the field to open the game and were just 1-of-6 from deep.
Northern Iowa had its biggest offensive quarter of the game in the second, scoring 23 points on 50.0% shooting from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. On the other side, Southern scored 14 points on 5-of-10 field goal shooting.
One half in, and the Salukis trailed, 39-24.
The Saluki offense struggled to find a rhythm again in the third quarter, as it was held to 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting. Northern Iowa scored 19 points on the other end, extending its lead to 58-34 heading to the fourth.
SIU out-scored UNI, 17-16, in the final 10 minutes, but this wasn't enough as the Salukis fell, 74-51. Southern Illinois shot 36.0% from the field and 4-of-13 from the three-point line in the loss.
Paige Clubb led the Salukis in scoring, posting 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from deep.
Southern, now 8-17 overall and 3-12 in conference play, will wrap up its four-game road trip on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Missouri State.
