The Gamecocks (9-9) scored two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings before adding insurance in the sixth and ninth to even the series.
After Logan Walters put JSU on top in the top of the second with a two-run blast, Trey Cutchen came back in the bottom half and delivered a game-tying two-run home run of his own – his second of the season.
Jacksonville State answered though with four-straight runs in the next two innings and never gave up the lead for the remainder of the game.
Mathieu Vallee hit his second home run of the season in the seventh to pull the Salukis to within three before JSU hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to four.
The Salukis (12-6) put the first two batters of the ninth on base as Nathan Bandy recorded a leadoff pinch-hit double. Vallee traded places with him a batter later but that would be all SIU would be able to push across the plate.
Al Holguin took the loss for Southern falling to 1-2 on the season. The southpaw struck out five but allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings.
Valle led the squad with a 3-for-5 day at the plate to go with two runs scored and two RBIs. Jake Allgeyer and Cole Christman also had a multi-hit day.
JSU starter Jackson Sleeper struck out seven in four innings in the no-decision. Kyle Chastine picked up the win in relief to move to 1-1.
UP NEXT
The series final with Jacksonville State is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
