CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois put together its most complete game of the season during a 15-1 run-rule victory over Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon to earn the series victory over the Gamecocks.
The Salukis (13-6) dominated at the plate, outhitting JSU 16-1 in seven innings while Aidan Foeller put together a masterful performance on the mound in the win.
Foeller dominated early as he retired five of the first six batters he faced on strikeouts. Foeller, a Nesbit, Mississippi product, did not allow a baserunner until the third inning of action and held the Gamecocks without a hit until the sixth inning. The right-hander ended his day with six complete innings, striking out nine batters to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Jacksonville State (9-9) used seven pitchers during the game, and none had an answer for the Saluki offense which was on fire for much of the day. SIU put up a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and never looked back.
Southern sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning, recording five hits in the frame. Clutch hitting was the difference as SIU scored all three of their runs with two outs on the board. The Salukis added three more runs in the fourth after the first three batters reached base.
Southern entered the sixth leading 7-1 and decided the end the game early with an eight-spot. SIU strung together five hits, and three walks but the highlights of the inning came off the bats of both Hesston Gray and Cole Christman who each delivered grand slams to put the game out of reach.
Steven Loden, Nathan Bandy, and Gray each tallied a team-high three base hits in the win. Loden started the game 3-for-3 with a trio of doubles. Gray led all Salukis with five RBIs while Christman had four RBIs to go along with three walks.
