Arkansas State (13-9) wasted no time getting on the board with three runs in the first inning of play. The Red Wolves used a trio of hits in the inning but were aided by a pair of errors that allowed the unearned runs.
Saluki starting pitcher Alec Nigut went just three and a third innings in the loss, allowing just two earned runs of the six that crossed the plate under his watch. In total, SIU pitchers allowed just five earned runs of the 10 Arkansas State runs in the loss.
Trailing 4-1, the Salukis (13-7) looked to get back into the game in the fourth as the squad sent seven batters to the plate. SIU took advantage of a two-out triple from Trey Cutchen followed by an RBI single from Nathan Bandy. SIU would also notch a run on a passed ball.
The Red Wolves answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning including a two-run home run from Daedrick Cail to make it 8-3 and that would be all A-State would need to close out the game.
Jake Allgeyer, Jordan Bach and Cutchen each had two apiece in the loss. Cutchen added two RBIs. Nigut was hit with the loss for the Salukis as the lefty fell to 3-1 on the year.
Kole Turner pitched three and two-thirds innings in the start, striking out four Salukis. Blaine Harpenau earned the win in relief after tossing two and two third innings and allowing just one run.
UP NEXT
The Salukis and Red Wolves will play Wednesday night in Carbondale with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. from Itchy Jones Stadium. Fans can also watch the game on ESPN Plus.
