CARBONDALE, Ill. – Appalachian State used a six-run seventh inning to power past Southern Illinois 9-1 Saturday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The result forces a Sunday rubber game at noon.
The Salukis (6-4) went for just two base hits in the game with Jake Allgeyer and Anthony Kodama claiming the base knocks.
Bennett Eltoft picked up a two-out walk in the second inning and Kodama drove him home to put the Salukis out in front.
SIU would hold steady in front as Al Holguin was able to limit the Mountaineers (8-2) in the scoring column. It wasn't until the fifth inning that App State would get on the board and the runs came as a result of a fielding error extending the inning – one of four errors against the Salukis on the day.
A sacrifice fly pushed across the tying run for App State before Banks Tolley singled to left field to put the visitors ahead.
Kade Combs would get the Salukis out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth out of the bullpen with a strikeout, but the Mountaineers would come back the next inning and score six runs on four hits, two walks, and an error to extend their lead.
Jackson Steensma pitched five complete for Appalachian State to earn the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander struck out five and allowed only the only two hits of the day for Southern. Collin Welch pitched four shutout innings, allowing just two baserunners.
Alex Aguila led the Mountaineers with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two RBIs while Tommy Walker drew three of the team's seven walks.
