Recap | Salukis Fall in Extras to UT Martin in 10 Innings

UT Martin (9-16) scored four unanswered runs, including three in the ninth inning to tie the game en route to the win. The final UTM four runs were all unearned.
Southern (17-8) wasted no time cracking the scoreboard as senior catcher Cole Christman connected on his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the first. After Trey Cutchen led off the game with a single, Christman sent a 0-1 pitch opposite field to give the Salukis a 2-0 lead.
It was the third when UT Martin was able to get something going at the plate. Cameron Brady doubled to left to start the inning and was able to come home after Skyhawk leadoff man Zac Rice singled over third base to cut the SIU lead in half.
Right-hander Jake Combs would have to work out of a jam on the mound with two UTM batters on base. Combs would get a fly ball to the warning track in left before Blaze Bell flew out to right to end the Skyhawk half-inning.
After the Dawgs went down 1-2-3 in the third, UT Martin came back in the fourth to tie the game after Garner Anderson led off the inning with a solo home run.
Nathan Bandy took advantage of runners on base in the fourth for the Salukis, singling through the left side and scoring Hesston Gray from second.
The Skyhawks once again knotted the game in the sixth as a runner was caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Garner Anderson to score from third.
For the second time in the game, Bandy gave the Salukis the lead. A two-run home run – his first of the season – in the sixth inning put the Dawgs on top 5-3. Rice would once again cut the SIU lead in half in the eighth with a solo home run.
Bandy would add two runs in the eighth with a double to the gap in left driving in his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game to make it a 7-4 lead.
The Skyhawks scored three runs in the ninth before Jake Allgeyer saved the go-ahead run from scoring with a diving play behind the bag at second and a glove flip to record the final out.
Allgeyer then sent a sky-high ball to the mound that fell in between four players for a one-out double. The Salukis would go on to load the bases, but a double play ended the threat and sent the game into extra innings.
An error in the outfield would aid the Skyhawks in the 10th inning as UTM brought home the go-ahead run on an RBI single to third.
Combs went four innings in the start allowing four hits and two earned runs. Alec Nigut pitched four and a third innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Ben Riffe was hit with the loss after being hit with an unearned run in the 10th inning, falling to 1-1 on the season.
UTM outhit SIU on the night 12-7. As a team, the Salukis drew 12 walks in the game but left 11 batters on base.
