EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Southern Illinois baseball surrendered six runs in the seventh inning, and that proved to be the difference as Evansville earned a series-opening 12-2 victory in eight innings Thursday night at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
The Aces (10-15, 1-3 MVC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after notching a run in the first and two runs on four hits in the second.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Southern Illinois (17-9, 3-1 MVC) would get in the hit column as Jake Allgeyer led off the inning with a single to right field to kickstart the offense. The Salukis would cut into the Evansville lead a batter later when Mathieu Vallee connected on a one-out single up the middle to bring home Allgeyer.
Senior Trey Cutchen went for a one-out single in the sixth and would come around to score when Cole Christman sent a ball toward first and UE would throw home, but not in time as SIU made it a 3-2 game.
The Aces would answer in the seventh with six runs as SIU sent four pitchers to the mound. UE sent 12 batters to the plate but only recorded one base hit as Southern issued a season-high seven walks in the frame. A leadoff single would signal the end of the day for Mike Hansell who battled a tough start early to pitch into the seventh.
After the base hit Southern would make an error on a bunt to put a runner in scoring position before two SIU relievers issued four-straight walks to score three UE runs before an out was recorded. Another bases-loaded walk would score the fourth run before two sacrifice flies capped off the scoring for Evansville.
Evansville added three runs in the eighth to secure the run-rule victory.
Hansell (3-2) pitched six innings and was hit with the loss after allowing four earned runs on nine hits.
The Aces outhit Southern 12-7 in the game with Hesston Gray leading the Salukis with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. The 12 walks issued by Southern Illinois marked a season high in the category.
Aces hurler Shane Harris (2-4) earned the win after surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out three. Four UE hitters had a multi-hit day led by Mark Shallenberger who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
