Southern (18-9, 4-1) took an early 2-0 lead thanks to two RBI singles from Jake Allgeyer, both scoring Cole Christman.
The Purple Aces (10-16, 1-4 MVC) then took the lead after scoring three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Kip Fougerousse. They extended their lead by holding the Salukis to three straight scoreless innings and adding a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Back-to-back singles by Anthony Kodama and Trey Cutchen forced Evansville starter Kenton Deverman out of the game in the seventh. Jordan Bach immediately brought them home with a two-run double to left center, and Hesston Gray cut the deficit to one with a clutch two-out single.
The Salukis had runners on first and second after the second out was recorded in the top of the ninth. Gray then singled through the left side and pinch-runner Justin Keuss narrowly beat the throw and tag at home plate to tie the game at 6.
A walk loaded the bases for Nathan Bandy, who put the Salukis ahead for good roping a first-pitch double to left center and giving SIU an 8-6 lead.
The Salukis added a pair of insurance runs after a single from Anthony Kodama and a wild pitch.
Easton Dermody improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching 4.2 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed three runs, struck out two and walked two.
Deverman pitched six innings and allowed four earned runs and ten hits in the start. Max Hansmann (0-1) was hit with the loss after surrendering the go-ahead runs in the ninth.
Jake Allgeyer and Hesston Gray each tallied four hits for Southern, including two RBI singles each.
