Recap | Salukis Fall Short in Finale as Aces Walk-Off in Extras
03/30/2024 | 5:13:00 | Baseball
The Salukis (18-10, 4-2 MVC) outhit Evansville 17-14 in the game including five doubles and a home run, but it wasn't enough as the Aces scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the game.
SIU took a two-run lead in the top half of the 10th when Cole Christman hit a solo home run with two outs on the scoreboard – his sixth home run of the season – to put the Salukis ahead. Southern would add another run later as Jake Allgeyer came home on a wild pitch to push the lead to 10-8.
A leadoff to the Aces (11-16, 2-4 MVC) would bring in Scott Harper from the Saluki bullpen and he would be greeted by Mark Shallenberge who tied the game with a two-run homer. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches put a runner in scoring position for the Aces before the Dawgs went to the bullpen once again.
UE looked to put down a bunt to move both runners into scoring position, but a slash hit off the bat of pinch hitter Kevin McCormick would end the game as the go-ahead run would come home from second.
Southern trailed early after the Aces put together a six-run third inning to take a 7-1 lead. SIU would chip away at the lead with runs in the fifth and sixth before going for a three-run seventh inning.
Justin Keuss would come up with a pinch-hit double in the top of the eighth to tie the game before Mathieu Vallee gave the Salukis their first lead since the second inning after beating out an infield single. The Aces would tie the game in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to send the game to extras.
Eight Saluki pitchers saw action in the finale as Aidan Foeller went just two and two-third innings to start. Harper (1-2) was hit with the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs.
Christman led the Salukis with three hits, including a home run.
UE would get six and two-thirds innings from Donovan Schultz on the mound in the start. The right-hander allowed six runs on 12 hits while striking out four. Nick Smith was credited with the win in relief moving to 1-4 on the season.
