CHICAGO, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (11-19, 6-14 MVC) extended its winning streak to three after defeating UIC, 69-65, in overtime on Saturday.
With the win, SIU clinched the eighth seed in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and will next play ninth seeded Indiana State on Thursday, March 14, at 12 p.m.
The Salukis got off to a blistering start on Saturday, scoring 22 points on 55.6% field-goal shooting in the first quarter. Southern Illinois also went 2-of-3 from deep to begin the game.
Southern did this while also holding UIC to a field-goal percentage of 38.5% in the opening 10 minutes.
Both teams scored 16 points in the second quarter, as Southern Illinois took a 38-33 lead into the halftime break. Senior Quierra Love, in her final regular season game as a Saluki, scored 20 points in the first half on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from deep.
The Flames had their strongest quarter of the game in the third, out-scoring the Salukis, 18-10.
In a low-scoring fourth, SIU out-scored UIC, 11-8, sending the game into overtime.
SIU's defense locked-up the Flames in the five-minute overtime period, as UIC scored just six points on 2-of-10 shooting. Southern scored 10 to win by a final score of 69-65.
Love finished with 27 points, a new career-high, while fellow senior Adrianna Katcher posted her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Katcher also had three blocks and two steals in the win.
As a team, the Salukis shot 64.3% from beyond-the-arc on Saturday.
Southern Illinois holds a record of 6-14 in MVC play entering next week's conference tournament.
