Bailey Caylor celebrates RBI triple in second inning.
Recap | Salukis Open Series with Shutout Win over Belmont

Carbondale, Ill. – Southern Illinois (31-8, 15-3 MVC) opened its series with Belmont (27-13, 13-6) with a 2-0 shutout win. The Salukis got on the board early with both runs coming in the first two innings and were able to hold on thanks to a shutout from Maddia Groff.

Groff finished with eight strikeouts while allowing zero walks and five hits on the day, all of which were singles. In her last five appearances she's totaled 47 strikeouts with at least eight in all five outings. She's also only given up five walks during that span.Â

Jackie Lis got the Salukis off to a quick start with a double off the wall in center field in the Dawgs first at-bat of the game. Lis would later be brought home on a sacrifice fly from Rylie Hamilton to send Southern up 1-0 in the first.Â
Â
Lis went 2-for-4 on the day and was one of just three Salukis to record a hit. Bailey Caylor and Emma Austin both also hit safely as Austin stole her 20th base of the season.

The bottom of the second inning began with an Emma Austin bunt single followed by a stolen base and an RBI-triple from Bailey Caylor. Caylor lifted a deep fly ball over the right fielder's head and one hopped, giving her plenty of time to slide in safely at third and score Austin.

Caylor led the Dawgs going 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles to go along with an RBI as she tallied a new season-high in hits.Â

With the win, Southern has now won five-straight as they extend its lead in the MVC standings with Belmont still in second place.Â

The Salukis are back at 2 PM on Saturday for Senoir Day as the Dawgs will honor eight seniors.Â
