CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southern Illinois baseball dropped its midweek matchup with Southeast Missouri, 8-5, Tuesday afternoon at Capaha Field. The Salukis scored two runs in the eighth inning to cut the Redhawk lead to two runs but were unable to complete the comeback.
SEMO (21-20) scored two in the first inning before the Salukis went to the bullpen for Shane Wilhelm to get the final out of the inning. Wilhelm was able to work a scoreless second before Southern notched two runs in the third to tie the game.
Jake Allgeyer pushed across the first run of the game for the Salukis (24-17) with an RBI single to right before Cole Christman collected an RBI double to tie the game – one of two doubles in the game for the senior.
A Brooks Kettering solo home run home run put the Redhawks back in front in the bottom of the third before taking advantage of a SEMO error in the fifth to knot things up for the second time in the game with a Jordan Bach infield single.
It was a four-run seventh inning that proved to be the difference in the game as Southeast Missouri sent nine batters to the plate and strung together five hits, including a home run by Ian Riley en route to the win and the season sweep of Southern.
In typical midweek fashion SIU sent eight pitchers out to the mound. After Alec Nigut allowed two runs in the first the bullpen went on to allow just one run over the next four innings. Cole Koonce would be hit with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh to fall to 2-1 on the season.
Each team tallied 10 hits in the game with Allgeyer and Christman picking up two hits apiece to lead Southern.
Collin Wilma went 2.2 innings in the start for SEMO, allowing two runs and four hits. Gavin Johnston (1-2) earned his first win of the year in relief for the Redhawks. Three of SEMO's 10 base hits came by way of the long ball.
