CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball snapped a six-game losing skid to ranked opponents after knocking off No. 25 Indiana State, 3-2, Friday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Anthony Pron came in with two outs in the eighth and closed the game out for his eighth save of the year to mark the first ranked win for the Salukis since the 2019 season when SIU defeated Dallas Baptist.
Hesston Gray put the Salukis (25-17, 9-7 MVC) on the scoreboard in the first inning as Southern took advantage of two base hits, including his double down the line in left to bring home Mathieu Vallee from second. Indiana State's Mike Sears doubled in the tying run in the second.
A pitcher's duel throughout, the Salukis got a strong outing from Mike Hansell on the bump in his return to his Friday night starting role. Hansell went 4.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits in the no decision.
Southern would regain the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Cole Christman before adding a much-needed insurance run on a throwing error in the seventh as the Sycamores (29-9, 12-4 MVC) looked to turn a double play.
Relief man Easton Dermody (4-1) entered in the fifth with a runner on and one out and got out of the inning unscathed. Dermody would ride that momentum to the eighth inning, allowing just two hits in 3.1 on the mound. The lone run he allowed came in the eighth inning when Luis Hernandez sent out a solo home run to cut the SIU lead one run.
Pron entered with runners on and two outs in the eighth and did not allow a hit. He let his defense work behind him, but it would be Pron who finished the game with a 1-4-3 double play to secure the Saluki win.
SIU outhit Indiana State 8-7 in the game with Vallee recording multiple hits for the 18th time this season.
Jared Spencer went 4.1 innings in his start for the Sycamores, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. Jacob Pruitt fell to 1-1 after allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth.
