Trailing 9-1 entering the eighth, Southern strung together four hits and three walks to score six runs. Saluki infielder Jake Allgeyer connected on a fastball and sent his third home run of the season over the wall in right field – a three-run home run to make it a 9-4 ballgame.
After Cole Christman doubled, Hesston Gray walked and Jordan Bach singled to load the bases, Nathan Bandy sent a bases-clearing double down the line in left to cut the Sycamore lead to just two runs at 9-7.
Indiana State and reliever Zach Davidson would get out of the innings on a lineout double play at third base to end the Saluki rally.
SIU (25-18, 9-8 MVC) put pressure on in the bottom of the ninth with Cole Christman coming up just short of tying the game with a long fly ball to the warning track in left as Cameron Holycross closed out the game for his second save.
It was all Indiana State (30-9, 13-4 MVC) early as the Trees jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Sycamores worked a pair of two-out walks in the second and ISU would drive in the first run of the game when Randel Diaz singled through the left side to score Joe Kido.
Two more runs came across for the Sycamores in the fourth inning of action to take a 3-0 lead. Mike Sears led off the inning by being hit-by-pitch before Grant Magill drove him in with a double off the wall in left-center. Kido was hit-by-pitch on a bunt attempt and Southern Illinois would go to the bullpen for Cole Koonce with two on and no outs.
ISU loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch before Koonce forced a groundball to shortstop to turn a double play as one run crossed. Southern would get out of the inning when Jordan Bach made a diving play in right field to end the Sycamore scoring rally.
Southern would break into the hit column in the fourth when Jake Allgeyer led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Indiana State's Brennyn Cutts would go on to retire the next three batters he faced on popups.
SIU broke into the scoring column in the fifth. Senior Nathan Bandy led off the inning with a double down the line in left. Bandy stole third before Mathieu Vallee singled to center to notch the first run of the day for Southern.
Indiana State would take advantage to blow the game open in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out Southern went to the bullpen for Scott Harper. The right-hander would get a swinging strikeout before Magill sent a ball over the wall in left to extend the Sycamore lead to 7-1 with the grand slam.
Ben Riffe (2-3) went three innings for SIU, striking out three, and allowing three walks and three runs. Southern got three strong innings from Cole Koonce in relief as the right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out two in his outing.
Cutts (6-1) was impressive for the Sycamores as he went seven complete innings and allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out six batters.
