CARBONDALE, Ill. – Aidan Foeller tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts, but No. 25 Indiana State was able to secure a series win over Southern Illinois with a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Sycamores (31-9, 14-4 MVC) pushed across three runs early before Foeller was able to settle in on the mound.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Salukis were able to break into the scoring column courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of catcher Cole Christman – his team-leading ninth home run of the season.
Southern Illinois (25-19, 9-9 MVC) looked to tie the game in the fifth inning of action. After Jordan Bach drew a one-out walk, Trey Cutchen drove a ball to the gap in right field and SIU looked to send Bach around third to home, but he was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Foeller, a right-hander from Nesbit, Mississippi, retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced from the third to the sixth innings.
It was the seventh inning when Indiana State would breakthrough against Foeller, adding to their lead using a walk and three hits. With two outs, the Sycamores worked a walk and a single before Randal Diaz drove both runners in on a double to left center which signaled the end of the day for Foeller.
Shane Wilhelm would be called in from the bullpen and immediately be greeted with a two-run home run off the bat of Luis Hernandez to extend the ISU lead to 7-2.
Southern strung together back-to-back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth before ISU was able to close out the game with a 4-6-3 double play.
Foeller took the loss for the Salukis after allowing six runs on five hits, falling to 3-2 on the season. Foeller finished with 12 strikeouts and four walks over 6.2 innings.
Luke Hayden (6-1) pitched 7.1 strong innings for the Sycamores and allowed just two runs on seven hits while retiring six Salukis on punchouts. Cam Edmondson pitched the final 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing three hits.
Justin Keuss, Cutchen, and Christman each tallied two hits for SIU.
Grant Magill led ISU with two hits including a two-run home run in the second inning. Diaz added two hits for the Sycamores.
