Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois defeated Indiana State 12-1 (5) on Saturday in game two of the weekend series in Terre Haute. The Salukis used a seven-run fourth inning, including three home runs in the frame, for their second consecutive run-rule victory.

Maddia Groff made the start in the circle for the Salukis, going four innings before Madi Eberle took over in the fifth. Groff threw four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, just two hits, and a walk as she improved to 25-3 on the year.

SIU plated its first run of the day on a Sycamore error on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the third as Jackie Lis was able to make it home in plenty of time to give the Dawgs their first lead of the day.

Coming back in the fourth frame, Elizabeth Warwick sent out a shot to straightaway center field for her third home run of the season to bring in three runs and make it 4-0 with still no outs in the inning. Rylie Hamilton followed it up with another three-run home run before Katherine Johnson hit her second home run of the weekend and second of her freshman season.

Johnson has hit a home run with two RBIs in each of the last two games as she now totals 11 RBIs on the year.

Jackie Lis drew four walks in four at-bats as she ties the single-game program record for walks drawn in a game, last done by Kyleigh Decker in 2019 against Missouri State. Lis saw just one strike in 17 pitches.

The Salukis added on four more runs in the fifth on four walks, a hit by pitch, and a single from Haley Wilkerson to extend the lead to 12-0 in the top of the fifth.

Indiana State was able to get their first run of the weekend across in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Eberle would go on to strike out the next batter however and leave a runner stranded to end the game.

The Salukis will go for the sweep tomorrow at 11:00 AM CT.
