CHICAGO – Southern Illinois baseball dropped its series opener with UIC, 7-5, Friday afternoon at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago.
Southern (19-11, 4-3 MVC) recorded four errors in the field, resulting in four unearned runs for the Flames. It marked the fifth time this season that SIU has recorded four or more miscues in the field.
Seven Flames hitters came to the plate in the second as UIC tallied a trio of hits in the inning. Back-to-back singles to start the inning followed by an error at third would load the bases. UIC plated its first run on a sacrifice before Marcus Heusohn drove in two more runs with a single to right before Mike Hansell was able to retire the final two batters.
UIC (17-10, 3-4 MVC) starting pitcher Dillon Schueler faced the minimum through three innings of action before the Salukis were able to break into the hit column in the fourth with a two-out single from Cole Christman – one of three hits for the SIU catcher on the day.
Southern would get the offense going in the sixth with five runs crossing the plate on four hits, a walk, and an error. Christman connected on a double down the line to left to plate Jordan Bach who led off the inning with a single. Hesston Gray and Mathieu Vallee tallied back-to-back RBI singles to put SIU ahead for the first time in the game.
The lead didn't last long though as UIC pushed across two unearned runs in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the game. The Flames scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on an infield single before adding an insurance run in the eighth.
Southern put two runners on base in the ninth but a double play would end the game.
Hansell went five and a third innings, allowing five runs but only two earned runs. He struck out four and did not allow a walk. Easton Dermody was hit with the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.
Schueler went into the sixth inning before making his exit from the game. The right-hander struck out four, walked three, and allowed three earned runs in the no-decision. Ryan Smith (1-1) earned the win in relief before Reece Lawler picked up his sixth save of the year after closing the door in the ninth.
Christman led the Salukis with three hits and Nathan Bandy extended his hit streak to 15 games.
