Recap | Salukis Drop Saturday Doubleheader on the Road at UIC

CHICAGO – Southern Illinois baseball dropped a doubleheader with UIC Saturday afternoon as UIC earned the series sweep over the Salukis at Curtis Granderson Stadium. SIU dropped the opener 3-2 in 10 innings before falling in the nightcap 5-1. SIU falls to 19-13 overall and 4-5 in Missouri Valley Conference action while UIC improved to 19-10 and 5-4 in MVC play.
Game Two – Southern Illinois 1, UIC 5
Southern put together a three-hit third but UIC was able to get out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout and a foul out to end the inning. Back-to-back doubles from Bennett Eltoft and Nathan Bandy would put the Salukis on top in the fourth inning.
SIU strung together seven base hits through the first four innings of action, but also stranded six baserunners.
UIC went on to tie the game in the home half of the fourth. After Kendall Ewell walked and Ryan Nagelbach singled through the right side, the Flames would score on a delayed steal as Nagelbach took second and Ewell came home on the miscommunication.
Nagelbach singled down the line in right to lead off the sixth inning before an error at third base moved runners to the corners with one out. UIC would make the Salukis pay for the blunder the next at bat with a sacrifice bunt to score the go-ahead run to make it 2-1 Flames.
Right-hander Aidan Foeller (2-1) did all he could on the mound, setting a new career high with 12 punchouts in six complete innings.
Two errors allowed a pair of runs to come across for the Flames in the seventh inning to extend the UIC lead to 4-1. Both runs reached on walks with two outs on the board before a throwing error extended the inning allowing UIC to add the unearned insurance runs.
Southern was able to put two runners in scoring position in the eighth after Hesston Gray and Bennett Eltoft reached on walks and stole second and third. Vincent Gohlke would get out of the jam with a ground ball to second base. After loading the bases in the eighth, UIC added another run on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1.
Kendall Lyons pitched five complete and allowed eight hits but just one run to cross the plate. Rigel Verciglio (2-0), Gohlke, and Reece Lawler combined to pitch the final four innings, allowing no hits and just three baserunners.
Saluki pitchers allowed just five base hits and two earned runs in the game.
Christman led the Salukis with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Allgeyer had two hits as SIU finished the game outhitting UIC 10-5 but stranded 11 runners on base.
Game One – Southern Illinois 2, UIC 3 (10 Innings)
The Flames secured the series win over Southern Illinois with a walk-off win in the 10th inning of action as Kendall Ewell singled through the left side to bring in Marcus Heusohn who led off the frame with a double.
The Salukis got off to an early lead with a run in the second on a wild pitch before UIC answered with a sacrifice bunt to score the tying run in the fourth.
SIU starting pitcher Al Holguin went into the fifth inning, but UIC would string together a pair of hits to signal the end of the day for the southpaw. Ewell put the Flames on top for the first time in the fifth with a double down the line in left which scored leadoff man Zane Zielinski.
Jake Allgeyer hit his second home run of the season – a solo shot down the line in left – to tie the game in the sixth inning.
Cole Koonce entered in the seventh with the bases loaded and no one out for UIC and would get out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out.
Brandon Bak pitched six complete for the Flames, striking out six and allowing four base hits. Dylan White earned the win in relief after pitching the 10th. UIC got three scoreless innings of relief from Zak Gould who did not allow a hit and struck out just one. He allowed just one baserunner on a walk in the appearance.
UIC outhit Southern in the opening game of the day 8-4, stranding 14 baserunners.

Southern Illinois returns to action on Tuesday as SEMO comes to Itchy Jones Stadium for a midweek meeting at 6 p.m. The game will serve as Greek Night at the ballpark.
