NORMAL, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball fell to Illinois State, 7-1, Saturday afternoon at Duffy Bass Field in Normal to drop the series with the Redbirds.
Junior designated hitter Justin Keuss was the lone Saluki to cross the plate after recording his first triple of the season to open the third inning of play. The St. Louis native came in a batter later when Trey Cutchen flew out to left field for the sacrifice fly to tie the game at one run apiece.
Illinois State would put the pressure on in the fourth inning with a five-hit inning en route to plating three runs and taking a 4-1 lead. With one out on the board, ILS would put a runner on with a single. A high throw on a pickoff put a runner in scoring position before SIU was able to induce a fly ball for the second out of the inning.
The Redbirds would come up with four straight two-out hits to plate the runs, including a two-run double from Shai Robinson. Saluki starting pitcher Al Holguin – who was making his first start in two weeks due to an injury – would exit the ballgame in the fourth as Easton Dermody was called upon to get the final out of the fourth.
Three more runs would come across for Illinois State in the game as the Redbirds were able to cruise to the series win.
Southern was held to just four base hits in the game while ILS went for 11 hits led by Auggie Rasmussen with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Holguin (3-3) took the loss for the Dawgs after 3.2 innings allowing six hits and four runs. The southpaw struck out three and issued one walk in his return. Dermody went 2.2 innings in relief, issuing five walks and allowing two runs.
Right-hander Tanner Perry led the way on the mound for Illinois State, going seven complete innings and allowing just one run on two hits to move to 6-5 on the season. Perry struck out four and walked five in the outing. Matthew Donnison closed out the final two innings, allowing just two hits.
