CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-0-2)Â beat the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State, 1-0, to get its first win of the season.
The Salukis got off to a dominant start in the first half with seven shots. Ashlyn Henrie had the best scoring chance in the half. Henrie's shot came in the 24th minute and hit the post to go off target.Â
The Salukis and Redhawks were even throughout the first half in saves, shots on goal, and corner kicks.Â
It wasn't until the 64th minute when Avery Smith and Dana Cruz set up Sophia Schlicklin to give SIU the lead. The goal was the first of Schlicklin's collegiate career.
"I thought we went deep and then scored. We had to shift a number of players and created a great goal, a great delivery from Avery Smith, Dana with the lead off and Sophie with a great finish," head coach Graeme Orr said.Â
The Salukis continued to put pressure on the Redhawks throughout both halves of play, recording 11 total shots. Fabiana Solano had three saves on the night to keep the Salukis in the lead.Â
"Delighted to get the win, delighted to still be undefeated in the season," Orr said.Â
The Salukis will play next against IU Indy at home on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, at 1 p.m.Â
