CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball defeated Missouri State in five sets to lead off the Saluki Invitational Thursday in Carbondale.
The Salukis (7-3) took a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Bears (5-6) battled back and held momentum heading to a winner-take-all set five. The Salukis never trailed in the final set and got the victory to begin 1-0 in conference play.
Kelly Franklin, Anna Jaworski, and Annabelle Sulish each tallied double-doubles en route to the win. Sulish now has six double-doubles on the season. Franklin and Sulish tied for the team lead with 17 kills, and Jaworski led with 27 assists.
Southern Illinois dominated the first set, holding a 20-14 late and scoring five of the last six to win set one by double digits.
Missouri State held close in set two and led 23-21 late in the set, but after tying the match at 24, a clutch block from Eva Krakowski and Avery Parris set the table for a kill from Franklin to win 26-24.
A late Saluki run in set three was not enough to sweep the match as the Bears took a close 25-22 win. The same story was said in set four, a close set, 25-23 Missouri State.
The Salukis quickly turned momentum around in set five and Sulish's seventeenth kill of the night capped a true roller-coaster affair.
