CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (5-2-4) defeated Murray State, 1-0, on Sunday in its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season.
"I think Senior Day was the catalyst for us to go on and really show our grit and fight for each other," head coach Graeme Orr said. "I thought we got ourselves in the lead and deserved the points."
Maycie Massingill netted her second goal of the season and the game-winner against the Racers. Massingill's goal came in the 25th minute of play. In the first half leading up to the goal, the Salukis had four shots and Massingill had two of them.Â
In the second half of play, Southern Illinois had two shots and one shot-on-goal by McKensey Bunch. The Racers out-shot the Salukis with seven shots and five shots-on-goal but couldn't connect to score an equalizer. Â
Goalkeeper Fabiana Solano had 10Â saves on the day. Solano, along with Lucy Horn and Dory Latenser, played the full 90 minutes on Sunday.
The Salukis will travel to Chicago, Ill., to face UIC on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
