What Coach Has to Say
"We are really looking forward to the challenge of competing against Vanderbilt this weekend," said head coach Geoff Hanson. "The opportunity to race against a team from the SEC, the fastest swimming conference in America, in their home pool and on their Senior Day will be a great test for the Saluki women. It is also our last regular season meet before the MVC Championships in late February, so it is an important competition to gauge where we are just about four weeks away from our biggest meet. I expect our women to be ready to battle."
Last Time Out
The Salukis were previously in action on January 18 for Senior Day against Eastern Illinois, with the women's squad winning their competition, 194-58.
A total of thirty individuals and relay teams from the women's squad found their way onto the podium and 14 gold medals belonged to SIU's women's team as well.
The team was primarily led by Celia Pulido, Olivia Herron, and Susanna Hernandez, all of whom finished first multiple times. Pulido was a part of the women's 200-yard medley relay winning team while also winning the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. As for Herron, she was also part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team and came in first in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM. Finally, Hernandez was the anchor of that winning 200-yard medley relay team. She also grabbed gold in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.
On January 22, Herron and Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez were honored by the Missouri Valley Conference for their efforts against Eastern Illinois as well as January 17's meet against Little Rock and Henderson State. Herron was named the MVC's Women's Swimmer of the Week while Gallegos earned the title of Freshman of the Week.
Saluki to Watch – Olivia Herron (Jr. / Breast & IM)
Herron comes into the Vanderbilt meet fresh off her second MVC Women's Swimmer of the Week. The Manchester, England, native earned the honor after earning eight podium finishes between the Little Rock and Henderson State meet and Eastern Illinois competition. She also met the NCAA "B" standard three times between the two matches, doing so in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke twice.
