CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball continues its recent slide in a midweek loss to Southeast Missouri State Tuesday in Cape Girardeau. After falling down 2-0, the Salukis took set three before the RedHawks closed the match with a dominant fourth set.
A 10-2 run in the middle of set one was the difference as SEMO stormed ahead, keeping SIU at arm's length for the rest of the set to take a 1-0 lead.
Larissa Seger tallied three of her six blocks on the night in set two as Southern stretched a 21-14 lead. The Nova Petropolis, Brazil, native also had a career-high five aces on the night. The lead would quickly fade, however, and SEMO would take the set with an astounding 11-1 run.
"We started fast in every set and built leads early, but we let some big leads slip away with lots of unforced hitting and serving errors," Head Coach Brittany Harry said. "This was not one of our best nights offensively as a team, and when you add 12 missed serves to the equation it's going to be really hard to beat any team."
Southern let all of its frustrations on the night out in set three. The Salukis led 8-0 through a combination of Seger's dominant net play and two aces from Annabelle Sulish. The Redhawks would bounce back to even tie the match, but Sulish's third ace of the set gave SIU a win in set three.
Harry credited her outside hitters for continuing their solid performances.
"Once again, I thought Kelly had another great night on the court and I am really starting to see her step up as a leader which is great to see," she said. "I also think Annabelle and Ella Swansiger also had good nights offensively."
The trio of Franklin, Sulish and Swansiger combined for 35 of Southern's 49 kills on the night.
SEMOÂ put the match away in set four, never trailing and taking the frame by a score of 25-13.
"We will watch the film and make sure we address what needs to be addressed and adjust what we need to before Bradley on Friday," Harry said.
