10/27/2025 | 1:35:00 | General
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Fall athletics are starting to wind down at Southern Illinois. Women's golf just concluded their fall season while the men's squad competes in their final fall competition this week. Meanwhile, cross country is set to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships this Friday. And soccer wraps up their regular season on Thursday before possibly beginning their postseason run on Sunday.
Soccer (10-4-3, 4-3-1)
Soccer had a busy penultimate week of the regular season, playing in two conference games.
On Thursday, the team hosted Indiana State for the final home game of the regular season. The Salukis dropped the game, 1-0. Reagan Miller made three saves in goal for SIU while Aylie Haycock generated the only shot on goal by a Saluki.
Southern got back into the win column on Sunday when they traveled to and defeated UNI 3-2. Dana Nadda had herself a game, scoring two goals including the game-winner. Sophia Schlicklin also scored for the Salukis while Lily Murray made a trio of saves in net. With the win, SIU clinched their spot in the upcoming MVC Tournament, their third tournament appearance in program history.
The Salukis conclude the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 30, with a 1 p.m. match at Drake. Additionally, if Southern fails to secure a first-round bye, their MVC Tournament run begins on Sunday, Nov. 2. As of now, SIU sits in fifth place in the MVC, meaning they would be on the road for that November 2 game. They must move up to at least fourth place if they are to host a first round game, and they must be in first or second place if they are to receive a first-round bye.
Volleyball (10-14, 4-6)
Volleyball saw action twice this week, getting swept in both matches.
On Friday, they lost to UIC 3-0. Kelly Franklin led the Salukis in kills with eight while Emma Lade dished out 15 assists. Defensively, Larissa Seger compiled five blocks and Jillian Shaneyfelt had 13 digs.
Then, on Saturday, Southern lost 3-0 to Valparaiso. This time, Annabelle Sulish led the team in kills with nine and Addison Kerr was the assist leader with 12. Cecilia Bulmahn had the most digs amongst the Salukis with 16.
SIU finally returns home this week after a prolonged roadtrip. On Thursday, Oct. 30, they host Drake at 6 p.m. for the Halloween Spooktacular. UNI then visits Carbondale on Saturday, Nov. 1, for a 5 p.m. match and First Responders/Military Appreciation Day.
Football (5-3, 2-2)
After a two-game skid, football found their way back into the win column this weekend by defeating UNI 31-17. DJ Williams had an efficient game, going 19/23 and two passing touchdowns, with Jay Jones and Aidan Quinn reeling in those touchdown passes. On the ground, Edward Robinson and Chandler Chapman both rushed for over 80 yards and Chapman found the endzone as well. Defensively, Jeremiah McClendon had himself a day, picking up an interception, sack, and two pass breakups.
SIU now hits the road on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they visit Murray State for a 4 p.m. game.
Men's Golf
Men's golf is currently in action at their final fall competition. Today, Oct. 27, through Wednesday, Oct. 29, they are at the Ka'anapali Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii.
