
This Week in Saluki Athletics: October 6-12

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Legacy Weekend has come and gone at Southern Illinois, and as usual, it was full of plenty athletics action. Three teams were in conference play, both golfs and cross country continued their seasons, and swim and dive kicked off their 2025-26 campaign.
Soccer (9-2-2, 3-1-0)
Southern had just one match this week, a Sunday matinee versus UIC. Following an early goal, SIU held on to shut out the Flames 1-0. Sophia Schlicklin scored the lone goal in the game and was assisted by Guliana Balistreri. In net, Reagan Miller made five saves to secure her fifth shutout of the season. And with the win, the Salukis have now set the program record for wins in a season with nine.
Once again, SIU has just one match on the schedule for this week. On Friday, Oct. 10, they travel to Murray State for a 3 p.m. game.
Volleyball (8-9, 2-2)
Volleyball appeared in three matches this week, going 1-2.
The win came on Wednesday in 3-0 fashion over Memphis. Kelly Franklin was the only player in the match with double-digit kills, grabbing 13. Meanwhile, a pair of Salukis were in double-digits for assists, with Emma Lade dishing out 18 and Addison Kerr putting up 15. Digs wise, Jillian Shaneyfelt led the way with 12.
Conference play resumed on Friday when Indiana State visited Carbondale and downed SIU, 3-1. Kelly once again led all players in kills with 18, while Lade snagged another 33 assists. On the defensive end, three Salukis had 10-plus digs, with Shaneyfelt leading the pack with 21.
On Saturday, Southern traveled to Belmont where they lost 3-1. Kelly was tied for the game-lead in kills with 19, while two other Salukis hit double-digits in that category. Lade had another 26 assists, and Meghan Anderson was right behind her with 24. Three Salukis had over 10 digs.
It is all conference play this week for Southern. On Friday, Oct. 10, SIU hosts UIC at 6 p.m. for the Stop the Stigma/Mental Health Green Out game. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 11, Valparaiso visits Carbondale for a 5 p.m. game and Youth Volleyball Day.
Football (4-1, 1-0)
Conference play began this weekend for football, who took care of business and defeated Indiana State, 55-27. DJ Williams threw for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also rushing for two scores. Chandler Chapman also had two touchdown rushes and Edward Robinson had one as well. Receiving wise, Vinson Davis III collected 140 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, Donnie Wingate snagged an interception.
Southern now prepares for one of the toughest tests of the year. On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Salukis travel to Fargo, North Dakota, to face #1/#1 North Dakota State at 2:30 p.m.
Men's Golf
Men's golf competed at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational last week, where the team finished fourth of the 19 teams competing. Jaeseung Na broke the SIU 18-hole record and helped lead the team to program lows in 18, 36, and 54 holes. In the standings, Anthony De Schutter led the way, scoring 208 (-8) and tying for twelfth.
The team now has a brief break before competing in the Purdue Fall Invitational from October 13-14.
Women's Golf
Women's golf was also in action last week, finishing last at the Diana Thomason Invitational. Kayla Sayyalinh was the highest finisher for the Salukis, tying for 37th place with a score of 234 (+18).
Cross Country
Cross country ran in the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday. Ben Chance led the men's squad, finishing the 8k in a personal best 24:51.0. As for the women's team, Hannah Meiser led the Salukis with an 18:16.6 6k, which was over 40 seconds faster than her previous personal best.
The team now has one final race before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships hit. On October 17, the team competes in the Angel Mounds Invitational, hosted by Evansville.
Swim and Dive
The 2025-26 season began this past weekend for swim and dive, who competed at Missouri State on Friday and Saturday. The women's squad picked up a 260.5-181.5 win, while the men's team fell 275-171. Freshman Lívia Munkácsi-Nagy had a fantastic collegiate debut, finishing first in three of her four individual events while also being a part of the winning women's 400-yard free relay team. Olivia Herron also had a great meet, picking up four individual wins and one relay win. And on the men's side, Willem Huggins stood atop the podium in both of his individual races while participating in three relay wins.
Swim and dive is back at it this weekend with two meets. On Friday, Oct. 10, the team visits UIC at 3 p.m. They then stay in Chicagoland for a 11 a.m. meet on Saturday, Oct. 11, against Northwestern and Miami (OH).
