What Coach Has to Say
"We are really excited about getting the 2025 MVC Men's Championship started tomorrow evening," says head coach Geoff Hanson. "This group of Salukis has come together over the past six months and have improved week to week and month to month. The guys are looking forward to showing what all of their hard work has accomplished. Go Dawgs."
Last Time Out
Southern's men's squad was last in action on January 18 when they hosted Eastern Illinois for Senior Day. It was a successful day for the Salukis and their seniors, who defeated their in-state rival, 164-78.
Following the 1650-yard freestyles and the Senior Day ceremony, SIU first saw success in the men's 200-yard freestyle, with Rodrigo Ramos, Willem Huggins, and Hazem Aboustate filling up the podium in that order. The Salukis also swept the top-three spots in the 200-yard freestyle thanks to John Cameron, Alex Cimera, and Elliott Dye.
Henrique Pacheco Januario and Tiago Faleiros were first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke, before Nicolas Lanuza, Nate Worsham, and Juraj Barcot all stood atop the 200-yard butterfly podium.
Alex Santiago was the only swimmer to finish the 50-yard freestyle in less than 20 seconds, and Benedek Andor was that event's runner-up. Andor found the podium again in the 100-yard freestlye, finishing second behind AJ Terry and one slot ahead of Donat Csuvarszki.
Huggins, Dye, and Alex Brodsky were first, second, and third, respectively in the 200-yard backstroke, and Pacheco added another medal to his total after winning the 200-yard breaststroke.
Barcot took home gold in the 500-yard freestyle before Santiago won the 100-yard butterfly and Andor finished first in the 200-yard IM. The afternoon ended with SIU's "A" team winning the 200-yard free relay.
In total, Pacheco and Santiago led the men's team in first place finishes in individual events.
The following week after the meet, Pacheco and Ramos were honored as the MVC Men's Swimmer of the Week and Men's Freshman of the Week, respectively. Between the Eastern Illinois meet and the Henderson State meet, which occurred the day before Eastern Illinois, Pacheco picked up six total podium finishes along with a new career-best in the 100-yard breaststroke. As for Ramos, the freshman had five podium finishes between the Henderson State and Eastern Illinois meet.
