CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois softball (1-8, 0-0) is back in the tournament scene this weekend when it participates in the San Marcos Classic on Sunday and Monday. Between the two days, the Salukis will play both Kansas (4-5, 0-0) and Texas State (8-2, 0-0) twice.

Last Time Out
The Salukis were last in action at the Snowman: Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Mississippi State last weekend. Versus No. 19 Mississippi State, North Texas, and Georgia Tech, the Salukis went 0-4.
Southern lost the opening game of the tournament, 10-3, to the host, No. 19 Mississippi State. Anna Carder and Haley Wilkerson both had two RBIs in the game while Jackie Lis and Charley Pursley collected hits as well. Kaytee Dahlstrom threw two scoreless innings in relief.
SIU then played a doubleheader on Saturday, losing the first game, 4-3, to North Texas. Carder collected two of SIU's RBIs and Amanda Knutson had the other RBI. In the circle, Emma Gipson was perfect in relief, not allowing a hit over three innings of work.
The Salukis then lost to Georgia Tech to end Saturday's slate. Lis went 4-4 at the plate while hitting two home runs. Emily Williams also had a home run, and Carder added another two RBIs to her season total. Pitching-wise, Jordyn Stuessy allowed no earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
The Tournament ended with a 6-5 loss to North Texas. Carder continued her hot start to the season when she hit her second home run of the season. Addi Baker, Maleah Blomenkamp, and drove runs in too.
Weekly Awards
Following the trip to Mississippi State, a pair of Salukis earned weekly honors from the Missouri Valley Conference.
Lis was named the MVC Player of the Week. Lis batted .462 while in Mississippi with a .563 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. She also hit two home runs to total four RBIs and crossed Homeplate four times herself.
Then, Williams was named MVC Newcomer of the Week. She posted a .286 batting average while getting on base at a .375 clip. She hit one home run over the week to reach a slugging percentage of .714.
The Series and the Matchups
The Salukis and Kansas have matched up 11 times before with Kansas holding a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series. They last matched up in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2023, with Southern taking that game, 5-2. Kansas' last win came in 2016 when they visited SIU and won, 10-4.
As for Texas State, the Salukis have faced the Bobcats four times in their shared history. Last season, the two split a pair of games in San Marcos. Texas State won on Feb. 11, 2024, 3-1, after SIU won, 6-1, on February 10.
