JONESBORO, Ark. – Southern Illinois baseball picked up its third straight win Tuesday afternoon in Jonesboro as the Salukis defeated Arkansas State, 7-5.
Leading 5-4 in the eighth inning, Tim Simay added insurance for the Dawgs with a two-RBI single to put the Salukis ahead for good before Blaine Harpenau shut the door in the bullpen over the final two innings to earn his first save of the year.
Southern's offense continued where it left off in Tennessee, outhitting the Red Wolves 12-11 in the game. Simay, along with Jordan Bach, Cecil Lofton and Mason Schwalbach tallied two hits apiece for the Dawgs.
SIU wasted no time jumping out ahead of the Red Wolves with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Bach led off the game with a double and came home on an RBI single from Lofton. Southern would add another run on the board when Schwalbach recorded the RBI groundout to bring in Lofton from third base.
The Salukis added to their lead in the second with another run as Jaxon Holder grounded out to bring home John Lemm to make it 3-0. A throwing error by Arkansas State plated the fourth run of the game for the Salukis in the fourth inning.
Saluki right-hander Tyler Timmerman held A-State scoreless for three innings of action. It was the fourth when the ASU was able to get on the board after the first three batters reached base. A-State went on to score three runs in the inning to cut into the SIU lead and make it a 4-3 game.
Leading 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning following Matt Schark's sacrifice fly. A-State looked to tie the game in the bottom half, but the Saluki defense had other plans as left fielder Michael Mylott gunned down the tying run at the plate in a 7-6-2 putout.
Simay's two-run RBI in the eighth was crucial as the Red Wolves would cut the lead to two in the eighth before Harpenau ended the rally, retiring all five batters he faced to close it out.
Timmerman went three and two-third in his first start, allowing six hits and three runs. Grant Richars did not allow a run in an inning and a third. Cole Koonce earned the win out of the bullpen in the sixth. Matt Irvine struck out one and allowed one run in an inning and a third.
Lelie van der Jelle fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing the go-ahead run. Tyler Weimer made the start for the Red Wolves, giving up three runs on six hits in two and two-third innings.
