NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-22 overall, 2-15 conference) didn't have an answer for Belmont's defense on Thursday, suffering a 73-43 loss in Nashville.
Southern Illinois shot 30% from the field, 25% (4-of-16) from three-point range, and 70% at the free throw line in the loss. The Salukis struggled with turnovers, finishing the game with 22 compared to Belmont's 13. The Bruins scored 19 points off of turnovers on the night.
The rebounding margin heavily favored Belmont, as it out-rebounded SIU, 51-27, overall and, 19-6, in terms of offensive rebounding. In the paint, the Bruins also out-scored the Salukis, 42-20.
Belmont was consistent offensively all night, scoring 18 points in the second, third, and fourth quarters after posting a game-high 19 points in the first.
On the other end, the Salukis were held to nine points in each of the first two quarters, leading to a halftime deficit of 37-18.
Southern scored in double figures in both the third and fourth quarters, but did not score over 15 points in a quarter on the night.
Gift Uchenna paced the Salukis with 13 points and five rebounds, while Kayla Cooper had 12. They were the only two players in double figures for SIU on Thursday.
The Salukis will turn their attention to a road contest at Murray State on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in their final away game of the regular season.
