CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-17 overall, 2-10 conference) suffered an 87-63 loss to Indiana State on Sunday at the Banterra Center.
Indiana State went 45% from the field and 46% (15-of-33) from three-point range in Sunday's win over SIU. On the other end, the Salukis shot 32% from the field, 19% (3-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 57% at the free throw line.
The Sycamores had a big offensive first quarter, scoring 23 points on 4-of-7 (57%) three-point shooting. Southern countered with 3-of-9 shooting from deep, with Isabella Palmqvist going 2-for-4 and Kayla Cooper going 1-for-2. SIU trailed, 23-19, after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Indiana State out-scored SIU, 21-18. Cooper and Mia Gaines both had five points to lead the team in the quarter.
Indiana State led, 44-37, at the end of the first half. Keslyn Secrist (13 points) and Bella Finnegan (10 points) both scored in double figures in the first 20 minutes to lead the way for the Sycamores.
The visitors began to take over in the third, where they out-scored the Salukis, 26-12. Indiana State shot 59% from the field and 60% (6-of-10) from three-point range, while Southern Illinois shot 26% from the field and went 0-of-3 from deep.
Finnegan and Secrist combined for 20 of ISU's 26 points in the quarter.
The Sycamores closed out the game in the fourth, out-scoring the Salukis, 17-14, to win by a final score of 87-63.
Gaines had a career-high 14 points on Sunday, while Cooper (10 points) and Gift Uchenna (12 points, 14 rebounds) also scored in double figures.
Southern will stay at home for its next game, which will be on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Missouri State.
