CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball earned its fifth-straight win Saturday afternoon after defeating Bowling Green, 4-1, at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Salukis (6-3) arms combined to allow just five base hits in the win as Alec Nigut and Gavan Wernsing tag-teamed the day for the Dawgs.
Nigut was strong to start the game, recording four punchouts and allowing just one walk over two innings of action.
Bowling Green (4-4) would take an early lead in the third inning after two runners reached to start the inning on a single and a hit-by-pitch. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, the Falcons would bring in the runner from third on a groundout to second off the bat of DJ Newman.
Southern was able to answer with a run of their own in the fourth when Kristian Sprawling drove in Matt Schark on a sacrifice fly. The Dawgs would take their first lead of the game in the sixth as Schark did it all himself. The senior led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a balk and coming home to score on a wild pitch.
Nigut and Wernsing continued to dominate the mound for the Salukis throughout and would enjoy two more insurance runs late. The Salukis tacked on two in the bottom of the eighth as Gabe Petrucelli and John Lemm went for back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 4-1.
Nigut, a Des Moines, Iowa native, improved to 3-0 on the season after a seven-inning outing. The lefty recorded four strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.
BG starter Landon Willeman went five complete and surrendered just two base hits and a run in the no-decision. The righty struck out four and issued three walks in the outing. Carrson Sova took the loss for the Falcons after giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth.
