MARION, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball clawed back multiple times, but Morehead State's offensive onslaught proved too much as the Salukis fell 18-12 Friday afternoon at Mtn Dew Park in Marion.

A scary moment in the first inning as outfielder Kristian Sprawling collided with the wall in left. The junior was stabilized and taken via ambulance to receive medical attention. Following the nearly 40-minute delay play resumed.

A back-and-forth contest early on saw Southern Illinois (11-5) fight to erase a first-inning 5-0 deficit, only for Morehead State (7-9) to counter with big innings throughout the night. The Eagles racked up 19 hits, led by JJ Dutton, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored. Davis Germann and Hayden Robbins each drove in a pair for Morehead State.

The Salukis responded in the second with a four-run rally, highlighted by a two-run single from John Lemm. Gabe Petrucelli cut the lead to 10-6 with a solo homer in the fifth, while Mason Schwalbach and Jordan Bach also went deep to keep Southern Illinois within striking distance.

Morehead State, however, capitalized on timely hitting, scoring five in the fifth and four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Dylan Petrey (2-1) took the loss for SIU, allowing five runs over four innings. The Salukis' bullpen struggled to contain Morehead State's offense, surrendering 13 runs over the final five frames. Josh Furtado (1-0) picked up the win for the Eagles, tossing three innings of relief while allowing two runs.

Jordan Huskey made the start on the mound for SIU but struggled to find his rhythm after the delay. The right-hander lasted just one inning, allowing six hits and five earned runs before handing the ball over to the bullpen.

SIU will look to even the series on Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium. The game is now set for 6 p.m. CT to avoid weather.
