Recap | Salukis Surge Late to Overpower Morehead State, 14-4

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois exploded for nine runs in the eighth inning to break open a tie game and cruise to a 14-4 victory over Morehead State on Saturday, evening the weekend series with the Eagles.
The Salukis (12-5) held a slim 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth before their offense erupted. Tim Simay sparked the rally with a two-run triple, and Kaleb Hall capped it off with a two-run homer to center to end the game. Southern Illinois took advantage of an error and a pair of bases-loaded walks to pile on late.
Michael Mylott got the Salukis on the board in the third with a two-run homer, and Jaxon Holder added an RBI single in the fourth. Jordan Bach's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 before Morehead State (7-10) began to chip away.
Alex Kean's solo shot in the fifth and Hunter Thomas' RBI single in the sixth pulled the Eagles within two. A two-run double by Andy Cisneros in the seventh tied the game, but Southern Illinois regained the lead in the bottom half when Bach scored on a wild pitch.
Alec Nigut was dominant in the start, allowing just one run in the outing, but the left-hander was forced to the bench early after taking a line drive off of his throwing hand an out into the fifth inning. Nigut went 5.1 innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run on four MSU hits in the no-decision.
Jackson Payne (1-0) earned the win for the Salukis, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Ethan Davis (1-1) took the loss for Morehead State, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings.
The Salukis collected nine hits and benefited from five Morehead State errors. Petrucelli and Hall each scored three runs, while Simay drove in a team-high two.
Morehead State was led offensively by Alex Kean, who went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and Andy Cisneros, who doubled and drove in two runs. Hunter Thomas added an RBI single as part of the Eagles' eight-hit effort.

The Salukis will close the series with Morehead State on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Itchy Jones Stadium.
