ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Southern Illinois hurler Tyler Timmerman was nearly untouchable on the mound, retiring the first 12 batters he faced and leading the Salukis to a 3-0 shutout victory over Lindenwood on Tuesday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
An O'Fallon, Missouri native, Timmerman (4-1) continued his dominant season with eight innings, striking out six while allowing just two hits and no runs. The right-hander was locked in from the start, throwing 15 first-pitch strikes and setting down the first 12 Lindenwood hitters in order. The Lions didn't record their first baserunner until a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Timmerman and the Salukis were able to work around the baserunner to keep Lindenwood off the board.
Southern Illinois (21-7) scored three runs in the fifth inning to give Timmerman the edge that he needed. Kaleb Hall led off the inning with a triple to the gap in left before being brought home three batters later when senior Matt Schark singled to short.
Gabe Petrucelli reached base on a hit-by-pitch and was able to come around and score on a Michael Mylott sacrifice fly before Cecil Lofton capped off the inning with an RBI single to center for his 21st RBI of the season.
Lindenwood (7-19) struggled to generate any offense, managing only two hits against Timmerman in eight innings. The Lions would work a leadoff walk in the ninth to close the door on Timmerman's day before Sam Frizzi entered from the bullpen to record a groundout double play and a flyout to end the game and secure his fourth save of the season.
Right-hander Kris Alcorn (0-1) took the loss for Lindenwood after giving up three runs in the fifth. He struck out three batters and walked two in the loss.
