John Lemm led the offensive charge for Southern Illinois (24-11, 7-5 MVC), going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBIs. Lemm put SIU ahead early with a solo home run in the second inning, his 12th of the season. He later doubled home Gabe Petrucelli as part of a two-run fourth inning, temporarily tying the game at three.
Tim Simay also delivered at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Salukis a brief advantage. Cade Nelis added two RBIs on two hits, and Michael Mylott knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Sycamores (18-17, 7-5 MVC) responded strong in the fifth inning, plating five runs highlighted by Cesar Pena's two-run homer, reclaiming momentum and an 8-3 lead.
Southern Illinois refused to back down, mounting another comeback with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. Nelis singled in a run, and two more scored on an Indiana State throwing error, tying the game at eight. Despite the resilient offensive effort, the Sycamores answered again, putting up four decisive runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Meade Johnson started for SIU, allowing six earned runs over four innings while striking out four. Reliever Sam Frizzi (1-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs - only one earned - over two innings. Defensively, the Salukis committed a crucial error in the seventh that contributed to Indiana State's final rally.
Indiana State's Geremy Morris (5-3) secured the win with three innings of relief, allowing no earned runs and striking out two.
UP NEXT
SIU returns to Itchy Jones Stadium on Tuesday when the Salukis play host to Arkansas State. The first pitch with the Red Wolves is scheduled for 6 p.m.
