CARBONDALE, Ill. – With the end of the school year inching closer, spring teams in Southern Illinois athletics are preparing to hit the home stretches of their seasons. Women's golf is already participating in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, while men's golf while be doing so this upcoming weekend. Meanwhile, softball and baseball are in the heart of conference play, and track and field travels to a MVC school for their next meet.
Track and Field
Track and field partook in the Cougar Classic, hosted by SIUE, this past Saturday.
SIU's 4x100 relay team grabbed gold medal, as did Kasha Neilly in the 100-meter hurdle. Another hurdle event was won by Christian Coleman in the 110-meter event. Andre Jackson II also finished first, doing so in the 400-meter dash.
In field events, Southern swept the podium in the men's long jump with Darrione Williams claiming gold. Darius Fullerthen placed first in the triple jump event.
The Salukis have another meet this week. On Thursday, April 17, the squad will travel to MVC counterpart Indiana State for the Gibson Invitational. The meet runs through Friday, April 18.
Softball (25-15, 16-1)
Softball's week began with a two-day trip through Missouri.
On Tuesday, the Salukis visited MVC foe Missouri State; SIU downed the Lady Bears 6-3. Anna Carder led the way offensively with three hits and an RBI, and Amanda Knutson added a solo homer. McKenzie Newcomb earned the win in the circle after 4.1 innings of work without allowing an earned run.
The following day, Southern earned a major win over SEC school Missouri, 5-3. Emily Williams had the biggest hit of the game, a three-run home run to put SIU in front for good. Jackie Lis added an RBI while Kaytee Dahlstrom pitched four innings to earn the win; the freshman allowed just one earned run.
Southern returned home during the weekend for a three-game series versus Bradley.
SIU took the first game of the series 6-3 on Friday. Carder had two hits, including a home run to total two RBIs. Sage Grann had three RBIs herself, and Knutson added one.
The Salukis won 6-3 again on Saturday. Williams had the biggest hit of the day with a grand slam. Knutson and Lis added RBIs, and Dahlstrom struck out eight to earn her sixth win of the year.
Sunday featured the series finale, and the Salukis were able to complete the sweep of Bradley with a 9-3 win. Williams homered for the third time in her last four games, and Emma Austin had a multi-RBI game. Newcomb picked up her 15th win of the season after throwing 2.1 innings of shutout ball.
Softball's next week is a quiet one compared to last week. On Friday, April 18, the Salukis visit Northern Iowa in a rematch of last year's MVC Championship game. First pitch for the game is 5 p.m. The squads will play again on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m., as well as Sunday, April 20, at 12 p.m.
Baseball (24-11, 7-5)
Baseball had a busy week, playing a total of six games. The Salukis went 3-3 in those games.
Monday featured a doubleheader with Missouri State. Southern lost the first game, 9-5. Matt Schark and Kaleb Hall both hit homers, and Schark led the Salukis with three RBIs. Dylan Petrey had a solid game out of the bullpen, allowing one run over three innings of work.
Southern then walked off Missouri State to win the second game of the doubleheader, 8-7. John Lemm knocked out a pair of home runs, and Tim Simay added one as well. On the mound, Tyler Timmerman earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings.
On Tuesday, SIU welcomed Southeast Missouri to Carbondale for a non-conference matchup. Hall drove in three of SIU's runs, and Southern's bullpen trio of Petrey, Tanner Gerdes, and Sam Frizzi allowed no hits over the final 3.2 innings of the game.
Baseball then spent the weekend at Indiana State for a three-series.
The Salukis dropped the opener 9-7 on Friday. Jaxon Holder was the lone Saluki to tally multiple RBIs and four other SIU batters had one RBI.
Saturday's game ended 16-9 in favor of Southern. Lemm added another home run to his season total; him and Simay each had four RBIs.
The Salukis dropped the rubber-match on Sunday, 12-8, to lose the series. Lemm hit yet another home run, and Cade Nelis joined Lemm in having two RBIs in the game.
Four home games await SIU this week. On Tuesday, April 15, Arkansas State visits for a 6 p.m. game. That night is also Jackie Robinson Night, Greek Night, and the Dawg Pound Cookout. Belmont then visits Itchy Jones Stadium for a three-game set starting on Thursday, April 17, at 6 p.m. The two play again on Friday, April 18, at 6 p.m. before concluding the series on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m.
Men's Golf
The men's golf team traveled to the Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday. Their stay there will run through tonight, April 14.
Women's Golf
Women's golf started their run at the MVC Tournament on Sunday. The event runs through Tuesday, April 15.
Football
Football is back at SIU on Saturday, April 19, when they play their Spring Game at 11 a.m.
