How it Happened
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Anna Carder hit a solo home run to left center to give SIU an early 1-0 lead. The home run was Carder's sixth of the season.
Kaytee Dahlstrom was sharp in the first, producing three ground balls to preserve the Southern lead.
Northern Iowa's offense got going in the second, tying the game off of a bases-loaded walk. One inning later, the Panthers went ahead after hitting back-to-back home runs to make it 4-1.
The Salukis answered back quickly in the top of the fourth. The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, Emily Williams, hit a two-run shot to right center to cut the deficit to one. Then, with two outs in the inning, Addi Baker doubled to right field to score Erin Lee and tie the game at 4-4.
UNI, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, homered to left to go up, 5-4.Â
After both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, Williams homered for the second time in the game to tie it up at 5-5. The sophomore is now up to a team-high 14 home runs on the year.
A one-out double by the Panthers in the sixth pushed the hosts ahead, 6-5.
After a Jackie Lis double and a pair of Carder and Williams walks, the Salukis loaded the bases in the seventh but were unable to bring home the game-tying run and fell by a final score of 6-5.
