CARBONDALE, Ill. - Tate Lewis's heroics helped SIU pick up a series victory over Illinois State Sunday, April 27, in Carbondale, Ill. The Pleasant Grove, Utah, native had two RBIs in two at-bats as Southern Illinois completed a three-run comeback in a critical Missouri Valley Conference contest.
Matt Schark rocketed his 15th homer of the season over the center field wall in the bottom of the first, putting the Salukis ahead early.
Three straight RBIs from the Redbirds put them ahead in the top of the second. They stretched the lead to three with a solo home run from Graham Mastros in the top of the fourth.
Activity on the bases pushed Saluki starter Tyler Timmerman out of the game in the fourth. The right-hander pitched 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs, walking three and striking out two.
Al Holguin kept Illinois State at bay, coming out of the bullpen to throw 3.2 no-hit innings.
Illinois State's Tanner Perry locked down Southern's lineup as the game progressed, throwing three no-hit frames between innings four and six.
The Salukis would regain their offensive confidence with four straight base hits in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a pinch-hit RBI single from Tate Lewis. Jordan Bach added another with a sacrifice fly, but SIU could only bring the deficit to one after loading the bases.
Sam Frizzi continued his excellent season out of the bullpen, setting the table for an RBI groundout from Tim Simay in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. Lewis then roped a double down the left-field line to give the Salukis a 5-4 lead.
Frizzi did not allow a baserunner in the top of the ninth, securing the victory.
Joe Husak (0-3) took the loss for Illinois State after allowing the tying and go-ahead runs.
