ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois first baseman Cecil Lofton has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the League office announced Tuesday. It is the second weekly honor for Lofton from The Valley this season, and the fourth weekly award for the Salukis.
Lofton, a senior transfer from Bryan College, powered Southern Illinois to a series win against Illinois State over the weekend as well as a midweek win on the road at Southeast Missouri. The Resaca, Georgia native led the Salukis with a .438 average, a .938 slugging percentage, and a .500 on-base percentage on the week as SIU finished 3-1.
He collected a pair of multi-hit games during the stretch including a three-hit outing in the series opener against the Redbirds when he finished with seven RBI – one short of tying the single-game program record. In the game, Lofton had two home runs and a double to lead the Dawgs.
Lofton finished the week with six runs scored, nine RBI, two walks, and four extra-base hits in four starts.
UP NEXT
The Salukis return to action Tuesday at Itchy Jones Stadium with Lindenwood in town. The first pitch with the Lions is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
