CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball split a doubleheader with Missouri State Monday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. Southern fell in the opener in extra-innings 9-5 before John Lemm walked it off in the nightcap to give the Salukis an 8-7 victory.
Game Two – Southern Illinois 8, Missouri State 7
John Lemm capped a massive day at the plate with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as Southern Illinois stormed back to defeat Missouri State 8-7, salvaging the series finale.
Lemm, who reached base four times and drove in four runs, crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for his second homer of the game, snapping a 7-7 tie and sealing the win for the Salukis (22-9, 6-3 MVC).
Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Southern Illinois mounted a furious comeback. Matt Schark singled home Michael Mylott to get the rally started, and two batters later, Lemm delivered the game's biggest swing to that point — a three-run blast to right center that tied the game at seven.
Earlier, the Salukis fell behind 3-0 after Missouri State (16-14, 7-2 MVC) broke out in the second with a two-run triple from Logan Dunn and an RBI double by Logan Fyffe.
SIU chipped away with a run in the fourth on a Gabe Petrucelli RBI groundout, and trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth on Tim Simay's two-run homer to right.
Missouri State added insurance with a solo home run by Nick Rodriguez and an RBI single from Carter Bergman in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Saluki surge.
Schark finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while Simay, Mylott, and Kaleb Hall each added two hits for SIU.
Tyler Timmerman (5-1) earned the win out of the bullpen, throwing two shutout innings and striking out three. The right-hander worked around a walk and a hit in the eighth and ninth, allowing the offense the opportunity to complete the comeback.
Game One – Southern Illinois 5, Missouri State 9
Southern Illinois built an early lead and battled late, but a four-run 10th inning from Missouri State proved to be the difference as the Salukis dropped a 9-5 game one of the Monday doubleheader.
The Salukis led by as many as three runs and carried momentum into the middle innings, but Missouri State clawed back behind a standout day from Nick Rodriguez, who drove in five runs, including the go-ahead two-run double in extra innings.
Southern Illinois opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Jordan Bach scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Schark after leading off the game with a triple. Kaleb Hall added to the early lead in the second with a solo home run to center, and the Salukis padded the advantage in the third with Schark's two-run blast to dead center, making it 4-1.
Meade Johnson worked into the fifth for SIU but ran into trouble as the Bears tied the game with a sacrifice fly from Rodriguez and a two-run homer by Jake McCutcheon.
Tied at 4-4, the game turned into a pitchers' duel into the late innings. Dylan Petrey delivered three solid innings out of the Saluki bullpen, striking out five and allowing just one run — a solo homer by Rodriguez in the seventh.
Trailing 5-4, Southern Illinois responded in the bottom half. After Jordan Bach doubled for the second time and advanced to third on a passed ball, Tim Simay drove him in with a sacrifice fly to even the game once more.
Sam Frizzi (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs in the 10th inning, though only one was earned. Rodriguez struck again with a two-run double to left-center and Carter Bergman followed with a two-run double of his own to give the Bears the final margin.
Bach led SIU offensively, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, and three runs scored. Schark added three RBIs and his seventh home run of the season, while Hall recorded his second long ball of the year.
Southern Illinois outhit Missouri State 10-9, but 13 runners left on base and a pair of late defensive miscues proved costly.
