Recap | Salukis Storm Back with Six-Run Eighth to Down SEMO, 7-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois used a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth and a lights-out bullpen performance to power past Southeast Missouri 7-3 Tuesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Kaleb Hall delivered the big blow, crushing a three-run triple to right-center that gave the Salukis (23-9) their first lead of the game in the eighth inning. Hall finished 3-for-4 and a home run short of the cycle as he drove in three runs, and scoring on a wild pitch moments after his bases-clearing hit.
Down 3-1 entering the eighth, SIU pieced together the comeback after a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Gabe Petrucelli brought the Salukis within one. After Hall's triple flipped the game, John Lemm added insurance with an infield RBI single to score Cecil Lofton, capping the six-run frame.
While the offense broke through late, it was the Saluki pitching staff that kept them in the game. Al Holguin gave the team 5.1 strong innings, scattering four hits and striking out five. The southpaw allowed two earned runs and worked around traffic early to limit the damage.
The bullpen was even better. Tanner Gerdes retired all five batters he faced in relief of Holguin, keeping the deficit at two runs into the seventh. Dylan Petrey (4-2) followed with a scoreless eighth and earned the win, working around a walk and striking out one. Sam Frizzi slammed the door in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect frame to notch his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Together, the bullpen trio combined for 3.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out four while holding SEMO (19-14) hitless after the sixth inning.
Cecil Lofton added two hits, while Petrucelli scored twice and drove in a run. Tim Simay chipped in two singles and was sharp defensively up the middle, helping turn two double plays with Petrucelli and Lofton.
SEMO took an early 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from Michael Mugan and a single from Cole Warehime. They added one more in the sixth on another Warehime RBI, but SIU's arms held them to just four hits total and shut them out over the final three frames.
