CARBONDALE, Ill. – While it was a rainy week in Carbondale, several Southern Illinois athletic teams were still in action. As for this upcoming week, baseball and softball continue their journeys through the Missouri Valley Conference while the golf squads inch closer to the MVC Tournament.
Track and Field
After this past weekend's Bill Cornell Spring Classic was canceled due to inclement weather, track and field now looks forward to the Gibson Invitational. Indiana State hosts the event from April 17-18.
Softball (20-15, 12-1)
Softball's week started with a weekly honor from the MVC, as McKenzie Newcomb was honored as the MVC Newcomer of the Week. The Samford transfer made two appearances against Belmont the prior weekend where she picked up a win while compiling a 0.00 ERA. In her 6.2 innings of work, Newcomb allowed just two hits and two walks. Meanwhile, she struck out four while holding opponents to a .091 batting average. This is the second time Newcomb has been named Newcomer of the Week this season and is her third weekly award overall as she was also named Pitcher of the Week on March 18.
Follow scheduling changes because of inclement weather, softball finally competed on Sunday with a doubleheader versus Indiana State. The Salukis were able to pull out the doubleheader sweep.
Game one ended with a 10-2 run-rule in five innings for the Salukis. Addi Baker went 2-2 at the plate with both of her hits being home runs; she totaled five RBIs in the game. Anna Carder also had two hits as she collected two RBIs, and Emma Gipson pitched all five innings on her way to a complete game win.
Southern then won game two 9-4. This time it was Emily Williams who hit a home run as she drove three runs in. Erin Lee and Sage Grann had multi-RBI games as well. In the circle, Newcomb picked up her 12th win of the year after pitching five innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen.
SIU faces a busy week ahead. First is a midweek trek through Missouri. On Tuesday, April 8, the Salukis visit Missouri State at 5 p.m. The next day, April 9, SIU faces Missouri at 6 p.m. in a non-conference matchup. Southern then returns home for a weekend series against Bradley. The MVC foes battle on Friday, April 11, at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 12, features a 2 p.m. game between the two, and the series concludes on Sunday, April 13, at 12 p.m.
Baseball (21-8, 5-2)
The week started on Tuesday for baseball as they took a non-conference trip to Lindenwood. There, SIU won 3-0. RBIs came courtesy of John Lemm and Mason Schwalbach, but the story of the game was starting pitcher Tyler Timmerman. He threw eight innings of shutout ball while striking out six and allowing just two hits.
Baseball was then affected by inclement weather as their weekend series versus Missouri State turned into a single game on Sunday. SIU lost that game 12-1 in seven innings. Jaxon Holder was the lone Saluki to drive a run in.
SIU and Missouri State concluded their series today, April 7, with a double-header. Game one will be at 1 p.m. while game two starts at 4 p.m. Southern then turns around to host Southeast Missouri State tomorrow, April 8, at 6 p.m. Then, SIU travels to Indiana State this weekend for a three-game series. On Friday, April 11, the two play at 5:30 p.m. They will play again on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m., before finishing the series on Sunday, April 13, at 12 p.m.
Men's Golf
Men's golf's trip to the Hoosier Collegiate was canceled this weekend because of inclement weather. They return to action this Sunday, April 13, at the Hawkeye Invitational. The Invitational will run through Monday, April 14.
Women's Golf
It was a busy week for women's golf. This past Monday and Tuesday, they were in Florida for the Coach Mo Classic. SIU placed 16th of the 16 team there. Pihla Pennanen was the highest ranked Saluki, tying for 47th place while scoring 231 (+15).
Currently, women's golf is concluding their trip to the UMD Terp Invitational. They are then traveling to the MVC Tournament this Sunday, April 13, and will be there until Tuesday, April 15.
