EVANSVILLE, Ind. - In the Southern Illinois University softball team's 11-0 (6) win over Evansville on Friday, senior Emma Austin broke the career stolen base record for SIU.
With no one out in the top of the sixth inning, Austin took off for second and stole her 64th career base, the most in Saluki history.
The stolen base broke a tie with Marta Viefhaus (1998-01) and Jami Koss (1993-96) for the all-time program-lead.
Inside the Box Score
- In the run-rule victory, Southern Illinois posted 13 hits with no errors. On the other side, Evansville had six hits with no errors.
- McKenzie Newcomb (18-5) was credited with the win after allowing three hits, three walks, with four strikeouts across four scoreless innings. Emma Gipson started the game and allowed three hits, no runs, one walk, with one strikeout in two innings pitched.
- Both Emma Austin and Sage Grann tallied three hits, with Grann finishing the game with three RBI and Austin finishing with two runs. Jackie Lis, Emily Williams, and Amanda Knutson all had two RBI in the win.
How it Happened
No runs were scored in the first two innings as both pitchers started the game with 1-2-3 opening innings.
Despite two runners being on base with one out in the bottom of the second, freshman Emma Gipson worked out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out to finish off her scoreless outing.
The Salukis got on the board in the third after an RBI single by Jackie Lis made it 1-0. After Emma Austin scored on a wild pitch, Emily Williams drove in Lis to put SIU ahead by three.
McKenzie Newcomb came in during the third and stranded two Purple Aces' on base to preserve Southern's lead.
Southern Illinois exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth to go up, 11-0. SIU scored a pair of runs off of an Amanda Knutson triple to begin the big inning.
After the triple, Austin singled and then recorded the record-breaking stolen base to put herself in scoring position.
Mikaela Coburn doubled down the left field line to score two more runs for the Salukis later in the inning.
Grann cleared the bases with a three-run double a couple of batters later to give Southern Illinois an 11-0 lead.
Newcomb finished off the Aces in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 11-0 win.
