CARBONDALE, Ill. – The 2025 soccer season is officially underway as Southern Illinois soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0) played host to Eastern Illinois (0-1-0, 0-0-0) Thursday evening in the season-opener. In what turned into SIU's best offensive output in program history, the Salukis dominated Eastern for a 4-0 win.
"They are a very well-coached team and it's the first game of the season so everyone is still trying to iron things out," said head coach Graeme Orr. "They are a very experienced team. I am delighted with the clean sheet. I am delighted with the work of our girls."

How It Happened
First Half
After a quiet eight minutes of action, Latenser opened the scoring with her unassisted goal at the 8:43 mark of the game. The Salukis did not wait long to add to their lead, with Schlicklin's goal coming less than eight minutes later; Schlicklin's score was helped out by a Dior Knorr assist.
Southern struck again at the 22:29 mark when a rebound off a Schlicklin shot landing right at the feet of Haycock, who just had to guide the ball into the open net. Despite a few more shots throughout the rest of the half, no one else could find the back of the net sending the two teams into the halftime break with SIU on top 3-0.
Second Half
The Salukis came out of the gate firing in the second half, putting three shots up, two of which found the net. However, a block from an EIU defender and two saves from their goalkeeper kept the score at 3-0.
SIU did breakthrough in the second half at the 65:15 mark when Anderson converted on a penalty kick to make it 4-0, Southern. Eleven minutes later, Eastern finally put their first shot on goal, but Saluki goalkeeper Reagan Miller stood tall to preserve her eventual shutout.
Only three off-target shots followed in the remaining 14 minutes of the game, and when the final buzzer rang, Southern walked away with a 4-0 win.
