CARBONDALE, Ill. – Just a week into the school year and Southern Illinois athletics is already in full swing. Soccer continued their undefeated streaking last week, while three more sports begin their seasons this upcoming week.
Soccer
Soccer's week started with a weekly honor for Reagan Miller, who was named the Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week. Miller, a USF transfer, made one, point-blank save to earn a shutout in SIU's 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois on August 14.
The team was back in action this past Thursday night when they hosted and defeated SEMO, 2-0. Dory Latenser scored the game-winning goal while being assisted by Olivia Anderson. Dana Nadda added a goal as well, with Latenser and Sophia Schlicklin adding an assist on her goal. In goal, Miller made three saves to grab her second straight shutout.
Southern closed the week out with a 3-1 win over IU-Indy. The Salukis trailed 1-0 for a majority of the match, but potted three goals in the final 15 minutes to come away victorious. Penny Warner, Michelle Betancourt, and Dior Knorr scored SIU's goals, while Betancourt, Schlicklin, and Nao Katamoto all added helpers.
Another pair of road matches await Southern this week. On Thursday, Aug. 28, the team visits Alabama A&M for a 3 p.m. match. Then, the Salukis travel to Southern Indiana on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m.
Volleyball
Following their exhibition game versus UT-Martin on Saturday, volleyball now prepares for the real deal. The squad opens their season at the SHSU Invitational this weekend. On Friday, Aug. 29, the team faces Sam Houston at 10 a.m. before playing Tulane at 7 p.m. SIU then takes on McNeese State on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 9 a.m. to close out the invitational.
Cross Country
The cross country squad has their first meet of the year when they race at the University of Illinois on Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m.
Football
The 2025 football season starts this Saturday, Aug. 30, when the Salukis host Thomas More at 6 p.m.
