CARBONDALE, Ill. – A four-game homestand came to an end Thursday night for Southern Illinois soccer (8-1-2, 2-0-0), who played host to Evansville (5-3-1, 1-1-0). After the Purple Aces took an early 1-0 lead, Southern scored two unanswered goals to pull away with a 2-1 win.
"We found a way to win tonight against a great side," says head coach Graeme Orr. "All the games in this conference are extremely tough and tight battles. We will review and recap for another battle away from home Sunday."

How It Happened
First Half
The Salukis quickly put a shot on goal when Anderson had a shot saved at the 5:22 mark. SIU put another pair of shots up right after, but neither were on target. It was then Evansville who struck first, scoring the opening goal in the 18th minute.
Southern did not take long to respond however, as Nadda finished a pass from Schlicklin at 19:04 to tie the game at one. SIU was able to challenge Evansville's keeper again at 31:42, but the goalie stood tall to keep the score even and send the game into halftime tied 1-1.
Second Half
It took just seven minutes into the second half for the Salukis to find the back of the net after Soto put the ball into the bottom left corner following some fancy dribbling. The Purple Aces challenged Murray at the 63:14 mark, but the freshman made her first save of the game to preserve Southern's lead.
Evansville was not able to put the ball on goal for the remainder of the half, and even though SIU was also unable to convert on any of their shots, they came out on top, 2-1, once the clock hit zero.
Up Next
For the first time since September 7, the Salukis now hit the road. They travel to Illinois State on Sunday, September 28, for a 1 p.m. match against the Redbirds.
