
This Week in Saluki Athletics: September 29-October 5

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The 2025 fall season continued last week for Southern Illinois athletics. Volleyball and soccer played in several, key, Missouri Valley Conference matchups, while men's golf's hot start to the year continued. As for this week, football, women's golf, and cross country resume action after off weeks, and the swim and dive team begins their 2025-26 season.
Soccer (8-2-2, 2-1-0)
Soccer split their two conference games this past week.
On Thursday, the Salukis hosted and defeated Evansville, 2-1. Dana Nadda and Londyn Soto potted goals for SIU, with Soto's being her first collegiate goal. Meanwhile, Sophia Schlicklin and Olivia Anderson provided assists.
Southern then hit the road on Sunday, traveling to Illinois State where the Salukis were shut out 2-0. Lily Murray made four saves in goal while Nadda did her best to get the offense in motion, putting up three shots-on-goal.
There is just one game on the docket for soccer this week. They host UIC on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. as part of their Family/Legacy Weekend.
Volleyball (7-7, 2-0)
Conference play began this week for volleyball, and it was a successful start for Southern, who picked up two wins.
First, SIU defeated Murray State 3-1 on Friday. Cecilia Bulmahn led all players with 20 kills and picked up a pair of aces. At the net, Eva Krakowski had a monster defensive game, picking up eight solo blocks. Jillian Shaneyfelt also helped on the defensive end, having 19 digs.
The Salukis then beat Evansville on Saturday, 3-1. Kelly Franklin and Annabelle Sulish shared the team-lead in kills with 12 as Emma Lade dished out 22 assists. Meanwhile, Jillian Shaneyfelt added another 19 digs to her season total.
Volleyball takes a break from conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when they visit Memphis at 6 p.m. They then return home and to MVC play on Friday, Oct. 3, with a 6 p.m. game against Indiana State for Family Weekend and BCA Night (Pink Out). Their week wraps up on Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 5 p.m. game at Belmont.
Football (3-1, 0-0)
Football enjoyed their bye week this past weekend. They now turn their attention to Indiana State, who visits Carbondale on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. for Family Weekend.
Men's Golf
Men's golf was in action last week at the Badger Invitational, where the Salukis tied for second among the 14 teams competing. Anthony De Schutter won his second straight tournament, tying for first place with a score of 205 (-11). For his efforts, De Schutter was named the MVC Golfer of the Week. Michael Mikus and Ben Keil also had top-20 finishes, tying for 12th place and 19th place, respectively.
The team is already back in action, participating at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational today and tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Women's Golf
Following a week off, women's golf is currently competing at the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. They will be there through tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Cross Country
The cross country team is back in action this week, competing at the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Swim and Dive
The swim and dive team hits the pool for the first time this season when they travel to Missouri State on Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4. Friday's events begin at 4 p.m. while Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m.
