Southern was just in action on Friday, falling to Drake 89-75. The game was tight through one half, with SIU up by one at the break, but a big second half from Drake allowed the Bulldogs to pull away and win by 14. Indya Green posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Jeniah Thompson had a double-double of her own with 16 points and 13 boards. Thompson also put up a good defensive game, swiping four steals. Alayana Kraus and Kayla Cooper hit double-digit points as well with 18 and 17.
The Matchup
All time, UNI leads the series 49-35. The Panthers have dominated as of late, winning the last eight games and 17 of the last 18 games, including the last matchup between the two on February 22, 2025, 87-51 at UNI. The Salukis last win in the series came in 2022, 64-60 in Carbondale. Southern has not won in Cedar Falls since 2016.
The Panthers enter this game 7-6 on the season while going 3-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play. A layup with eight seconds remaining gave UNI a 75-74 win over UIC on Wednesday in their last game. This extended the Panthers' win streak to three games dating back to December 21. UNI has rebounded nicely after starting the season 0-3. Competition has been tough for UNI, who has played and lost to two ranked opponents: 74-41 versus #21 Iowa (November 16) and 81-53 to #10 Iowa State (December 14). Recent history has treated UNI kindly however, with last season making it seven straight years with an appearance in the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament.
